Questions

Is this an official app?

No. Galway Bus Tracker is an independent app. Bus positions and timetables come from the National Transport Authority’s open data (CC BY 4.0), but the app is not run or endorsed by the NTA, Bus Éireann or any bus operator.

Is it free?

Yes. There is no account and no sign-up. The app is kept running by ads and by people who choose to support it on Ko-fi.

Why does a bus sometimes jump on the map?

New bus positions arrive from the NTA about every 30 to 40 seconds, and sometimes a bus stops sending its position for a few minutes. In between, the app moves the bus smoothly along its route, and corrects it when a new position arrives.

Why don’t routes 410, 411 and 412 show live buses?

These routes are run by City Direct, and the NTA does not publish live positions for them yet. Their timetables are available in the app.

Is there an iPhone app?

Not yet. On an iPhone, open the live map in Safari, tap Share and then “Add to Home Screen”. It opens full screen, like an app.

BusConnects Galway will change the route numbers. Will the app keep working?

Yes. The NTA plans to introduce the new Galway bus network, with new route numbers, from 2027. When it starts, the app will show the new routes. We will post an update here and in the app before the change.
